An Arctic, culinary destination
Icehotel Restaurant is ranked as the top restaurant in Kiruna and is in the top 3 in Swedish Lapland in White Guide (Sweden’s leading and most comprehensive restaurant guide) several years in a row. Our international kitchen brigade puts a continental twist on the local ingredients, taken from rivers, mountains, bogs, and forests in the area. With us, you will get to work with the flavours of Norrland; unique and exiting ingredients like lichen, fir, shoots, reindeer, and cloudberries.
We are particularly proud of the crystal-clear ice from the Torne River, which we of course bring into the restaurant to add another exiting element to the guest’s dinner. For example in the form of table decorations, or as plates to serve our famous ice menu on.
In a secluded part of the restaurant we have The Veranda, our exclusive chef’s table experience. For those who like to show off and talk to the guests while cooking, this is the place for you. Here you will get an opportunity to stand in the kitchen and at the same time meet guests with a culinary interest.
Here at Icehotel, which is located about 20 miles north of the Arctic circle, you have the opportunity to satisfy all your adventurous desires. Right around the corner you have ski slopes and trails, mile-long snowmobile trails and hundreds of lakes and rivers to fish in. As a member of Nordic Hotel and Resorts, you will get access to a staff price at Nordic Choice that give you the opportunity to discover the Nordics.
”Live like a local”
After breakfast you pack a lunch bag, something tasty to grill and of course some coffee. Then you put on all your winter clothes and head out. The clear morning is a little bit cold, but behind the pine forest the sun is rising. It is going to be a nice day.
You put on your helmet and start the snowmobile, and then you set off towards your secret destination. You travel through the magical winter landscape on the way to the lake where you have heard rumours about there being large arctic char.
Once there, you drill a hole through the meter-thick ice, lower your ice fishing rod into the hole. If you are like me, with poor patience, you’re done fishing after about half an hour without having caught anything. But if you try and give it an honest change you might just secure your dinner for the evening.
When you are done fishing, you use a shovel to make a sofa in the snow, cover it with a reindeer skin and build a campfire. You cook your lunch over an open fire and make a pot of coffee. Food tastes so much better outside, and nothing beats a good cup of coffee in the outdoors! In the afternoon you head back and cozy up in the warmth of your home.
